In the spirit of Ramadan, when we remember the most vulnerable among us, we are reaching out to you, in the hope that you will join us in our effort to serve the marginalized and often ignored Muslim women and families, we strive to provide our youth with the tools to create better lives than their elders and we also help elders overcome their circumstances.

feature-tpny girlsTurning Point provides a diversified range of culturally competent services focused on safety and self-sufficiency through direct services, advocacy and referrals. Turning Point believes that social change can be effected by raising awareness about the prevalence and effects of domestic violence, addressing it directly and offering safe spaces and opportunities for youth development.

Turning Point for Women and Families is the first community based, non-profit organization to address the taboo subject of domestic violence in New York City’s Muslim community. For over twelve years Turning Point has been working to provide culturally sensitive, spiritually grounded, free and confidential services to women, girls and children. We are continuing our Programming and Support Services for Senior Women and are proud to announce that we were able to relaunch our transformational Youth Leadership Workshop Series -  Mecca to Manhattan: Muslim Women Moving Mountains.

Over the past 12 years, and despite a tiny staff and modest budget, Turning Point has become a beacon of light for Muslim women, girls, and children, and has been recognized locally, nationally and internationally as an effective model for addressing youth development and domestic violence in the Muslim community. Our confidential location in Queens, which is near a large public transportation hub, and our culturally and religiously sensitive services, provided by trained staff and volunteers, foster a trusting relationship with our Muslim clients. Our multicultural and multilingual staff and interns reflect the diversity of the community in New York. Together our staff speaks Arabic, Urdu, Punjabi, Bengali, Hindi, and English and to date we have been a safe haven for over 1000 Muslim women, girls, and children.

We are Raising Funds…

  • feature-tpny girls-3To continue to provide crucial  Domestic Violence related direct services to the most vulnerable and marginalized Muslim women and children.
  • About 60% of our current funding for our direct services comes from a federal grant which ends on June 30, 2017.  In the current political climate, there is no certainty if that funding will be granted again and we need to find alternate funds to continue with our services since it is the current  anti-Muslim, anti-immigrant political climate, that victims of Domestic Violence are more vulnerable than ever to violence both outside and within the home exacerbated by the  fear and uncertainty around immigration status. To provide cash assistance to women in crisis.
  • This may be  first months’s rent to a woman/children  fleeing the abuser and/or expenses related to essential clothing, food and urgent  needs to enable a victim to find  to rebuild her life for herself and her family.
  • To cover the cost of transportation for clients.
  • Individual and Group Counseling, Advocacy, Referrals to Legal Services and other support services are provided free of cost to all victims of domestic violence. In order to encourage women to stay connected with our services we provide them round-trip metro card so they do not have to worry about the cost of traveling to our office.  etc.  are  provided for free, including the cost of transportation, in order to remove any obstacles from acquiring much needed services.
  • To expand our staff and build capacity to meet  the growing needs of  NYC’s Muslim community.
  • Turning Point currently provides all services with skeletal staff even as the need for our services The alarming rise in anti-Islam rhetoric, Islamophobic hate crimes and attacks leaves our most vulnerable to defend themselves on two fronts-the public and private spheres.
