In its seventh year, the 2019 MATATU Festival of Stories navigates the migratory patterns of global diasporas, presenting a series of regional experiences aligned in geographic movement and diasporic positionality.

On Friday, September 27 we look to the nations of Cambodia, India, Laos, and the Caribbean beginning with a dinner prepared by (James Beard semifinalist) Chef Nite Yun of the widely celebrated Nyum Bai. The evening moves along with the California premiere of LAOMAGINATION featuring poets Bryan Thao Worra and Kaysone Syonesa which is followed by a full comedic performance by Hari Kondabolu. Finally, we reach the center, with the TROPITAAL: Desi Latino Soundclash, a dance party celebrating the multi-textural fibers of our shared identity as one living organism.

The complete performance experience is included with each ticket, while the dinner package is limited.

NITE YUN founded Nyum Bai with one vision: to preserve and share Cambodian culture through food. The idea to start Nyum Bai came to Yun at a small noodle stall in Phnom Penh, Cambodia. Halfway through her bowl of Kuy Teav Phnom Penh, Yun realized a need to bring the beauty of Cambodia back with her to the States and represent for a culture that’s been tainted by war and genocide. She recreated her mother’s recipes from scratch, put together a menu, and set out to introduce Cambodian street food classics to the Bay Area.
