Congresswoman Bass joins us to talk police reform moderated by Loyola Law Professor Laurie Levenson. Why NOW are we at the tipping point?

Karen Bass

Nearly 30 years ago, Karen Bass and other activists in South Los Angeles thought the videotaped beating of Rodney King would bring about an effective police reform movement. Sadly, in many parts of the US that simply did not materialize. Now, in the wake of the George Floyd murder, Karen Bass, a powerful Democrat in Congress, has renewed hope that federal police reforms can be enacted.

Congresswoman Bass, chairwoman of the Congressional Black Caucus, has been charged by House Speaker Nancy Pelosi to develop the House’s response to the death of George Floyd. Bass introduced a bill that is designed to spark substantial movement in the arena of police reform.
