We will discuss America’s Broken Criminal Justice System and how to have Safe Encounters with Law Enforcement. This workshop is for youth ages 13+. We will discuss why the US has the largest prison system compared to all other countries, how 40% of those in prison are African American, and America’s pipeline to prison for Black youth. Finally, we will discuss the notion that being well-educated doesn’t protect you from being mistreated.
Next, Darryl Stallworth, an Oakland based defense attorney with over 25 years of experience, leads the discussion about your specific rights, what they mean, and how to handle yourself with intimidating law enforcement. We all know that many innocent men and women of color are often targeted and mistreated, but we never believe it could be us. We will discuss fear tactics, the mindset of officers, detectives, and our judicial system. We’ll talk about the common mistakes almost every person under direst makes, and how this adversely effects one’s judicial outcome.
