Celebrate the creativity of Black culture at the 5th Annual Black-Eyed Pea Festival. The stage honors Black history through music in many genres — traditional African chant and drums, jazz and blues and R&B from the Dynamic Mss Faye Carol to Harpist from the ‘Hood Destiny Muhammad as well as the New Orleans traditional band, MJ’s Brass Boppers.

Activities for children include face-painting, arts and crafts, storytelling by Unique Derique and a book giveaway. Renowned Black artists Nannette Harris-Jones, Karin Turner and TheArthur Wright will be on hand. Purple Party, Tres Mercedes, Nedra Williams and Xclusive Magic will be among the crafters and jewelers. Health organizations will provide free blood pressure, cholesterol and HIV screenings and community resources provide opportunities to register to vote or sign up for health and life insurance.

Lastly, and best, food choices run the gamut from barbecue from Jenny’s Fire Pit to Kid Kreole’s Louisiana cuisine, Grace Uggo’s Nigerian Panache Kitchen, all serving a version of black-eyed peas. Members of the Freedom Farmers’ market will sell fresh produce, including black-eyed peas still on the pod.
