[PHOTOS] 58th Cotillion – Oakland Bay Area Chapter of The Links, Incorporated
Founded in September 1950 by seventeen East Bay women, Oakland Bay Area Links, Incorporated (CA) holds one major fundraiser each year: The Cotillion. Their first Cotillion was held in December 1956 at the Claremont Hotel in Berkeley, CA and is held in December in San Francisco, CA. Over 1,000 young women have been presented as debutantes along with their escorts since its inception. Participation is open to female high school seniors who have demonstrated academic excellence and dedication to community activities. Social and personal development activities including etiquette and finance workshops and a community service project for the debutantes and escorts occur over a 9-month period. These activities culminate in the Cotillion honoring them and their respective families and friends.
The Cotillion has become one of the hallmark fundraisers for the African-American community in the San Francisco Bay Area. As a result of the proceeds generated through the Cotillion, Oakland Bay Area Links, Incorporated (CA) has provided more than $1,000,000 in grants funding to various Bay Area organizations through its Philanthropy program.
The Oakland Bay Area Links, Incorporated (CA) is a chapter of The Links, Incorporated, a non-profit, international volunteer, service and philanthropic organization of committed and dedicated women working to enhance the quality of life in the larger community. Founded in Philadelphia in 1946 by Sarah Scott and Margaret Hawkins, the organization has 12,000 members in 273 chapters located in 42 states, Germany, the Bahamas and South Africa. [more]
